TAWANG 4X4 ROAD EXPEDITION | Arunachal Pradesh
A 9-Day Journey Through the Wild Heart of Arunachal Pradesh
Guwahati → Shergaon → Mandala Top → Tawang → Bum La → Zemithang → Sangti Valley → Kaziranga → Guwahati
There are journeys where the destination is the goal. And then there are journeys where the road itself becomes the experience.
The Tawang 4x4 Road Expedition is a 9-day journey through the dramatic landscapes of Arunachal Pradesh, designed for travellers who want to experience the Eastern Himalayas beyond the usual tourist trail.
From the foothills of Assam, the route climbs into the mountains through Shergaon and Mandala Top, continues towards the high-altitude landscapes of Tawang and Bum La, ventures into the remote Zemithang Valley, descends through Sela Pass and Dirang into the tranquil Sangti Valley, and finally transitions from the mountains to the wildlife landscapes of Kaziranga.
This is not a conventional sightseeing tour. It is a road expedition built around landscapes, mountain roads, culture, wilderness and shared experiences.
Expedition Route
-
Day 1 — Arrive in Guwahati
Your expedition begins in Guwahati. Meet the expedition team, transfer to your hotel and settle in before the adventure begins.
The afternoon is kept relaxed, giving you time to rest and meet your fellow travellers over dinner. -
Day 2 — Guwahati to Shergaon
The city gradually gives way to forests, hills and the first mountain roads of Arunachal Pradesh.
Travel through Bhairabkunda, Balemu and Kalaktang before reaching the peaceful mountain village of Shergaon.
The day marks the transition from the plains into the Eastern Himalayas. -
Day 3 — Shergaon to Tawang
One of the defining road days of the expedition.
Travel through Mandala Top and Sela Tunnel, visit Jaswant Garh War Memorial and stop at the spectacular Nuranang Falls before continuing towards Tawang.
By evening, arrive in Tawang and settle into your mountain stay. -
Day 4 — Discover Tawang
Today is dedicated to the cultural and historical character of Tawang.
Visit the magnificent Tawang Monastery, explore Urgelling Monastery, learn about the region's military history at the Tawang War Memorial, and spend time at the local market experiencing everyday life in the town. -
Day 5 — Bum La, P.T. Tso & Madhuri Lake
An early start takes you towards the high-altitude frontier.
Travel towards Bum La Pass, near the India-China border, before continuing to the spectacular P.T. Tso and Madhuri Lake (Sangetsar Lake).
Surrounded by rugged mountains and high-altitude landscapes, this is one of the most dramatic days of the expedition.
Return to Tawang by afternoon/evening.
Important: Bum La access is subject to permits, weather, road conditions and local/Army permissions. -
Day 6 — The Zemithang Valley
Leave the conventional route behind and head towards Zemithang, one of the remote landscapes of the expedition.
The route takes you through Lumla and Tara Devi Viewpoint, followed by the Teesri Udasi Gurudwara and Gorsam Chorten before reaching the dramatic Zemithang Valley.
Here, traditional settlements, mountain landscapes and the Nyamjang Chu create an opportunity to experience a quieter side of Arunachal Pradesh.
Return to Tawang in the evening. -
Day 7 — Tawang to Sangti Valley via Sela Pass
Begin the return journey through the mountains, travelling via Sela Pass and Sela Lake towards Dirang.
As the altitude changes, the landscape gradually transforms from rugged high mountains into greener valleys.
After a short stop in Dirang, continue towards Sangti Valley, where open meadows, mountains and the peaceful valley landscape provide a slower end to the Himalayan section of the journey. -
Day 8 — Sangti Valley to Kaziranga
Leave the mountains behind and descend towards Assam.
The landscape changes once again as the route passes through Bhalukpong, forests, tea gardens, agricultural areas and rural Assam before reaching Kaziranga.
Check in to your resort and prepare for the final morning's wildlife experience. -
Day 9 — Kaziranga Safari & Guwahati
The final morning begins with a Safari in Kaziranga National Park, exploring its grasslands, forests and wetlands.
The park offers opportunities to encounter wildlife including the One-Horned Rhinoceros, elephants, wild buffalo, deer and birdlife.
After breakfast and check-out, depart for Guwahati for your onward journey.

More Than a Tour. It's a Journey.
The Road Is The Experience
Rather than simply travelling from one destination to another, the expedition places the journey at the centre of the experience. Expect mountain roads, changing terrain, remote settlements, dramatic viewpoints and long stretches where the landscape becomes the destination.
Offbeat Arunachal
Beyond Tawang, the expedition explores places such as Shergaon, Zemithang and Sangti Valley, offering a deeper look at the landscapes and communities of Arunachal Pradesh.
The Tawang Experience
The expedition spends dedicated time in Tawang, exploring its monasteries, historical landmarks and local life. The itinerary includes Tawang Monastery, Urgelling Monastery, Tawang War Memorial and the local market.
A Journey Worth Capturing
The expedition incorporates documentary-style photography, cinematic footage, content creators and drone perspectives where permitted, turning the journey into a visual narrative rather than simply a holiday album.
